ILA - Instituto de Línguas de Algés (Algés Language Institute), was founded by M. Menzl Boehm, in 1969, after she came from Angola, where she taught languages, namely English and German. She implemented and carried out a project of linguistic education in Portugal, choosing for the development of her activity a central location in Algés - Av. dos Bombeiros Voluntários, 29, 2º - , where the Institute still remains. The final charter with the Nº1899 was given in 03.11.1969 by the Portuguese Ministry of Education.

Several factors led to the foundation of innumerable schools, also orientated to the teaching of Languages, which reflected negatively upon the attendance of students at this Institute until the early 90's.

In 1993 Brigitte Schaeffer, the daughter of ILA's founder, came from Austria to Lisbon. Having lived in Angola, she faced Portugal as a return to her origins. She joined ILA as its Administrator, sharing with her mother ILA's daily life.

In 1995, upon the decease of her mother, Brigitte Schaefer definitely takes over the destinies of ILA. She restructures, modernizes and invests in ILA at all levels: curricula, pedagogical methods, equipments and facilities, qualified teachers and assessors, as well as remodelation and modernaising the instalitions of the Institute.

ILA then turned to the student, creating diversified and new learning alternatives, which were carried out at its facilities as well as at enterprises and organizations.

TODAY, more than 30 years upon its foundation, the institute counts on a solid group of teachers and assessors. ILA is a modern and healthy school, which serves the community and is prepared to face present and future challenges which, as it occurs with any other organization, might cross its path.

Society can count on ILA's contribution !
